The 3rd EMU Astronomy Workshop organized within the collaboration of Eastern Mediterranean University (EMU), Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Department of Physics, EMU Summer School Office (summer.emu.edu.tr), New Horizon Initiative and, EMU Astronomy Club was held on 12-13 August 2024 at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arif Akkeleş (ASA) Amphitheater and EMU Beach Club.
EMU Vice Rector for Promotion and Institutional Communication Prof. Dr. Ali Öztüren and the Head of EMU Departments of Physics and Chemistry Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı delivered opening speeches of the event and stressed that the event would be beneficial for the participants of the 3rd EMU Astronomy Workshop. Both Prof. Dr. Öztüren and Prof. Dr. Sakallı expressed their thanks to those who contributed to the event with their presentations and attended the event.
The 3rd EMU Astronomy Workshop organized within the scope of EMU International Summer School, hosted many academics. The presentations delivered on 12 August 2024 were; “Stories from the Universe” by Yenal Öğmen; “Time Travel” by EMU Department of Physics academic staff member Prof. Dr. Mustafa Halilsoy; “Modern Telescopes and Evolution of the Galaxy” by Tutku Kolcu; “LIGO-Gravitational Waves” by Gözde Soyel; “Reaching the Stars: Building Our Own Satelite” by Sedat İzcan; “Evolution of the Universe” by İbrahim Ekin Erkan; “Nothingness in Physics and Cosmology” by EMU Department of Physics academic staff member Assist. Prof. Dr. Huriye Gürsel. The second day of the workshop, 13 August 2024 also featured various presentations: “How to Hear the Sound of Colliding Black Holes?” (online presentation) by Middle East Technical University (METU) Physics Department academic staff member Prof. Dr. Bayram Tekin; “Exoplanets” by Sabancı University, Foundations Development Directorate academic staff member Dr. Ece Kilerci; “The Hearbets of the Galaxy” by EMU Department of Physics academic staff member Dr. Mert Mangut; “The Physics of Invisibility: Hawking Radiation and Quasi Normal Modes” by the Head of EMU Departments of Physics and Chemistry Prof. Dr. İzzet Sakallı; “Measurement Methods in Astronomy from Past to Present” by Ahmet Levent Takır; “The Philosophy of Science from Newton to Today” by Ufuk Balkan; “The Sun” by EMU Department of Physics academic staff member Dr. Zahra Amirabi and, “Some Historical Moments in Physics” by EMU Department of Physics academic staff member Prof. Dr. Habib Mazharimousavi.
Alongside the training sessions for students in 9th grade and above, the Hands-on Workshop also featured Telescope Observation Events and Cube Satellite Construction Activities. The Telescope Space Observation event scheduled for 12 August 2024, was held for students in grades 3-8, and on 13 August 2024, another session was held for those in 9th grade and above. At the end of the events, Prof. Dr. Öztüren presented gifts and certificates on behalf of the New Horizon Initiative to Yenal Öğmen and to Süreyya Sadisönmez, the winner of the Kahoot Quiz, representing the students who attended the 3rd EMU Astronomy Workshop. Furthermore, all students who participated in the certified training will receive e-certificates from EMU.
