EMU Chemistry Department Receives TÜBİTAK Award for a Scientific Research Project

Eastern Mediterranean University Arts and Sciences Faculty Chemistry Department has received TÜBİTAK 1001 support for one of the recent scientific projects which was evaluated by ÇAYDAŞ (Environment, Atmosphere, Earth and Marine Sciences Research Support Group).

Within the framework of the protocol prepared for supporting the scientific and technological research and development projects of the TRNC Universities by the Turkish Republic and as a result of the 1st Term project evaluations of the year 2014, EMU Chemistry Department academic staff member and Vice Department Chair Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mustafa Gazi’s project entitled  “Synthesis of the Multi-Hydroxy Functioned Magnetic Chitosan Micro/Nano-Composit Globules and Their Use as Boron Binder" has been found suitable by TÜBİTAK for support within the framework of '1001-The Support Program for Scientific and Technological Research Projects'.

The World Health Organisation stated that high boron levels in drinking water has negative effects on the human health as well as plants. The same organisation suggested that the maximum boron levels in drinking water should be 0,5 mg/l. Considering the boron pollution in Western Anatolia and Cyprus, the subject appears to be an extremely important one in terms of human health.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gazi stated that during the recent years, basic sciences such as nanotechnology, physics, chemistry and biology have been combined with engineering, making them attractive for scientific researchers.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gazi also stated that upon the completion of the aforesaid project, the effect of the nano-composit globules on the refinement of water in terms of the elimination of boron element will be analysed and evaluated.
