One of the prestigious science awards of the Turkish Physical Society, the Prof. Dr. Engin Arık Scientist Award has been presented since 2008 to preserve the memory and scientific vision of Prof. Dr. Engin Arık, who tragically lost her life in a plane crash in Isparta in 2007 and was well-known for her work in high-energy physics and her efforts toward Turkey’s full membership in CERN.
Prof. Dr. Ali Övgün’s research lies at the intersection of quantum gravity, black hole physics, astroparticle physics, cosmology, astrophysics, and quantum optics in curved spacetime. His studies particularly focus on examining the effects of modified gravity theories on black hole shadows, photon spheres, gravitational lensing, Hawking radiation, and quasinormal modes.
The primary objective of Prof. Dr. Övgün’s research is to better understand the observational properties of black holes and strong gravitational fields, contribute to testing alternative gravity theories through astronomical observations, and develop new analytical methods applicable to different spacetime geometries. His research on black holes contributes to methods and approaches widely used in international literature.
In addition to scientific productivity, international collaborations, scientific publishing and peer-reviewing activities, science communication, and support for the mentoring of graduate researchers were also among the important criteria in the award evaluation.
